That's My World Tuesday
Well, it was my world for at least a brief
part of the summer. I know it looks like
this
small boy was about to be engulfed
by a
large wave—but I was shooting
with
a long lens, so no worries!

Mellow Yellow Monday
The friends I visited recently in Montauk
have
installed birdfeeders near their deck.
Maybe it's because I'm a city girl (who can't
stand
pigeons), but I was a bit surprised to
find that
it's
actually very entertaining to
watch all
the different species of birds that
come to visit (these are finches—and I love
the jaunty stance of the one on the right).

Shadow Shot Sunday
I put these candle lamps out because
I
like
the way they look all together
when
the candles are lit. Come late
afternoon I discovered a bonus—
and
I
think I like the shadow even more.

photo Hunter — "framed"
Here's one Peruvian ruin framed by another.
Would love to go to Machu Picchu one day.
Meanwhile, I can enjoy the photos (including
this one) taken by my daughter Lila when she
and
her sister, Kate, traveled there recently.

Skywatch Friday
Spent a few days out in Montauk (at the
tippy-tip of Long Island) last week. One
evening we walked to Culloden Point—the
spot where the slave ship Amistad came
ashore—and watched this lovely sunset.

Thursday Challenge — "fun"
This looks like fun—I think. This trapeze was set up
on Governor's Island, and we watched a bunch of
people try it (no, I was definitely not one of them).
This young woman was an instructor; everyone else
had a safety harness. So, would you do it?

abc wednesday - F is for "flip-flops"
It's getting near that time when I'll have to put
mine away, and that makes me sad. For me,
summer = flip-flops. (How about you?)

That's My World Tuesday
It's the 65th anniversary of the famous photo
(taken on V-J Day by Alfred Eisenstadt) that's
depicted
by this statue in Times Square. The
nurse—
Edith Shain
was her name—just died
this
past June at the age of 91. Though dozens
of men have claimed to be the kissing sailor, he
has never been positively identified.

Mellow Yellow Monday
Here's the scenario I imagined: This guy
has been a VERY bad boy and he's carrying
these over-the-top posies home. Yes,
that's a subway pole buried among the
biggest bouquet I've ever seen (anywhere,
much less on the #3 express train!).

Shadow Shot Sunday
This is in the Castellani Chapel
in the Santa Croce
church in
Florence, where so much art
was damaged in the 1966 flood.
Believe this
crucifix was spared
though. It's attributed to the
school
of Giotto—and casts
a pretty dramatic shadow.

Weekend Reflections
I usually do the Photo Hunter challenge
on Saturday.
But the category this week
is "numerical," and
I am so numerically
challenged I could come up with
precisely
nada (or I guess I should say "zero").
So
here's what I would normally post on my
"other" blog
. Saw this while I was strolling
around beautiful, high-priced Brooklyn Heights.

Skywatch Friday
I was on the ferry riding between lower
Manhattan and Governor's Island,
turned
around, and saw . . . this!
If you blow it up you'll see that the
amazing light is shining down on
Lady Liberty and Ellis Island.

Thursday Challenge — "creativity"
There were crowds all around this artist
on the riva degli Schiavoni, on the lagoon
in
Venice—but he was very focused on what
he was
doing. I can't tell if he's an amateur
or a pro, but I like what he has there so far.

abc wednesday - E is for "educational & entertaining"
. . . and extremely bogus, I'm sure. I think
Coney Island is lots of fun, but I'm not gonna
spend my money on anything but a Nathan's
hot dog—and maybe the
Cyclone
!

That's My World Tuesday
What a nice way to spend part of a gorgeous
Sunday in New York! You can catch this
schooner at South Street Seaport and sail
around the harbor for a while. Or you can
do what I did and catch the free ferry over
to
Governor's Island
, rent a bike, and toodle
around, stopping to take pictures like this.

Mellow Yellow Monday
If you lived here on the island of Burano,
you could no doubt find your way home to
this house even in the dead of night—
it looks like it must glow in the dark!
(BTW, I looked all over Burano for the
store that sells these over-the-top
paint colors but never did find it—surely
it's there somewhere.)

These monks are probably a long way
from home—I found them on the
Brooklyn Bridge. And I love their
billowy saffron robes!

Thursday Challenge — "beverage"
This is the wine we drank with our 3-star
lunch
at the Grand Véfour, in Paris. It's a lovely 2000
Coteaux de Languedoc Chateau de Lascaux—at
49 euros, the 2nd-least-expensive white on their
list.
I'm hardly an oenophile, but the sommelier
heartily approved of our choice.
(And btw, you can get a 2009 bottle online
for $12.95.)

abc wednesday - D is for "dim sum"
After a charity walk one Sunday morning,
we decided to keep on walking—right over
to
Chinatown for some amazing dim sum.
The thing I ate the most of: those yummy
greens. The thing I wouldn't touch with a
10-foot chopstick: tripe!

It takes two . . .
If you're in NYC on a Saturday and absolutely
must tango, head for Central Park and join
all the other tango-obsessed folks who
gather from 6 to 9 pm by the statue of
Shakespeare near the Literary Walk. Last
week, this was the couple to watch.
(Check out this NY Times
video

a unique art gallery out in Greenport, on the
north fork of Long Island.

Photo Hunter — "colorful"
The Swiss Guards have been serving the pope
for more than 500 years. Their colorful outfit
has
evolved somewhat over the years (from no
official uniform to this over-the-top ensemble),
but
it's generally believed that the inspiration for
this current version comes from a Renaissance-era
painting by Raphael.

abc wednesday - C is for "cannolis"
Leave the gun
. . . take the cannolis
.
Clemenza probably bought them right here
in Little Italy before heading off to whack
Paulie Gatto. (I read that Richard Castellano
ad-libbed the second part of that line—and
that James Caan also ad-libbed
"bada-bing."
Brilliant.)

That's My World Tuesday
Well, it is my world—but I only go there
if I absolutely have to. This shot doesn't
quite
capture the hordes of people who
clog the sidewalks at all times and keep
you from getting where you need to go.
Times Square might be okay with no one
in it,
but, frankly, the only time that ever
happens is when there's a bomb scare!

—and those nets may possibly be
untangled by now!

gorgeous day, and the shadows were
just begging to be made!
