Monday Mellow Yellows

These yellow and orange flowers
shone through the snow and
added a spot of bright color to my
Brooklyn neighborhood.

Think pink!

Last month, the Luxembourg Gardens
were a riot of pink—in the flower urns and . . .

everywhere!  It was a glorious sight.

bright spot on a gray day

We had a day of ugly, freezing rain and very high
winds last week.  As much as I appreciated
comfort food and a glass of wine when I got home
from work, a little floral therapy helped too.

complementary

Big yellow flowers in a bright blue
container—these cut blooms made me
very happy for more than a week.

The Weekend in Black and White

I believe these dangly little blooms are
hellebores.  I just love their delicate beauty.

Tower of Flowers

Here's a recent arrangement made by
Remco van Vliet, the in-house floral designer
for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
If you'd like to know more about how he
creates his towering floral masterpieces, you
can read this article from the Wall Street Journal.

Thursday Challenge—"flowers"

You take your olfactory chances when you ride
the New York subways. You might find
yourself cheek by jowl with someone whose
hygiene habits are sketchy at best—or
you might get lucky like I did the other day
when the person next to me was toting these.

Fragrant and festive

Do you have a favorite holiday-season
flower? I have to go with paperwhites.
These were on display in a very large
space (i.e. definitely not mine),
so the fragrance wouldn't overwhelm.

Mellow Yellow Monday

Here's the scenario I imagined: This guy
has been a VERY bad boy and he's carrying
these over-the-top posies home. Yes,
that's a subway pole buried among the
biggest bouquet I've ever seen (anywhere,
much less on the #3 express train!).

photo Hunter — "purple"

If I have to choose, I think maybe the purple
flowers are my favorites. How about you?

Shadow Shot Sunday

I loved these shadows, but wasn't
able to find out what kind of flower
this is—anyone know?

Photo Hunter — "addiction"

Could have posted chocolate, or ice cream,
or cigarettes (kicked that one, fortunately).
I don't have a garden—or a green thumb—so I wait
all winter for the flower people to return
to the greenmarket so I can feed my addiction
for fresh flowers.  (If you think of them as
food for the soul, it hardly even seems like an indulgence.)
Well, the flower folks ARE back—last week, daffodils;
this week, tulips; next week, lilacs!

Shadow Shot Sunday

Caught these at my mom's house, where
things tend to remain reassuringly the same.
These fabric blooms (and their shadows) have
been giving her pleasure for a lot of years.

abc wednesday - Z is for "zucchini blossoms"

These were for sale at the Mercato Centrale,
in Florence. Some people like them stuffed with
rice or ricotta cheese. I prefer them on
their own, dipped in a light batter, fried, then
sprinkled with a tiny bit of sugar.
How about you?

flowers

They had a very nice selection at the Union
Square greenmarket this week.  All the
others featured bad spelling ("Easter lillies,"
"Ester lily"), so I chose these for you.
Now I just need to use my two lips
to wish you a Happy Easter!

last flowers of fall

Shot these on the North Fork of Long Island
on Saturday.  I'd like to dedicate this post
to my cousin John Ripley, a true hero, who
passed away this weekend.
