Thursday Challenge—"storm"

Looking back as we approached JFK this past Monday
(8+ hours from very sunny Rome)—and
 coming
through that dense ceiling
of clouds was one bumpy ride!
Welcome back to reality.

The Weekend in Black and White

My (lucky) brother and sister-in-law spend

quality time in this warm and cozy
"extra"
home Out East on Long Island; I like
its nice angles and
 shadows.

something for everyone . . .

at a food emporium I visited recently on
Long Island.  I ate a banana on the way there,
so I could resist all the treats for humans
(starting with the baking-right-now donuts just
inside the front door and continuing
with lobster rolls and a fried-chicken bar
bit
farther on)—and just get the salad fixings I came for.

The Weekend in Black and White

I'd like to join my brother and sister-in-law
here on their screened-in porch—just
sit back, drink something icy, and hope to
catch a breeze.  Unfortunately, I have
waaay too much to do.
Hope your weekend is cool and relaxing.

The Weekend in Black and White

I guess if you saved your corks
for years and years and years . . .
(though in the case of this restaurant,
it probably only took a few months).

blue door, red house

I'd like to meet the people who live here.

Whatever else they may be (patriotic, perhaps—

though they might be French and this is
bleu, blanc et rouge rather than red, white
and blue) . . . anyway, they're probably not boring.

inSPIREd Sunday

This is the Methodist church in Greenport.
Like so many Long Island towns,
Greenport
has a rich maritime tradition—
reflected
in the boat atop one of these spires.

Logical Progression??

I was out on the North Fork of Long Island
last weekend and passed this set of signs.  Had
to wonder what those two restaurants think
about being there with the next item on the list.

Thursday Challenge—"water"

Small boy vs. large wave: It's a standoff.
This kid was fearless!  But not to worry—he
was not quite as close to the water as he
seems to be here, and his parents were close by.

ABC Wednesday—V is for "vineyard"

The North Fork of Long Island used to be lined with
potato farms—now it's one vineyard after another, and
they produce some pretty good wine.  I shot this
from a car going about 50 mph (way to go, iPhone!).

ABC Wednesday—S is for "swans"

I went down the block from my mom's house
to feed this mama swan and her almost-grown
cygnet. S could also be for "Sandy" and
"storm surge"  (and "sad"), because not long after
I took this picture, the storm struck and the water
rose (and I trust these swans found shelter somewhere).

Photo op

Last weekend my sister-in-law and I went to play
with some baby goats at a farm out on the north fork
of Long Island. The kids were adorable, the
grown-ups were very willing to pose for us—
and the cheese wasn't baaaaad either!

Thursday Challenge—"round"

I actually snapped this big, round rising moon
back in August when I was out in Montauk (the name
of Long Island's primary Native American tribe).
The August moon got its name (the sturgeon moon)
from fishing tribes, but I prefer its secondary name:
the red moon.  Very fitting and much more
romantic—Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

Ruby Tuesday

A couple of red Adirondack chairs under a red maple
tree—I was tempted to interrupt my early-morning
walk and just "set a spell," as my grandmother used to say.
(I'm sure the folks who live here wouldn't have minded!)

Shadow Shot Sunday

Went to see Mom and took an early-morning
walk around this neighborhood I grew up in.
Very pleasant, but what a snooze—no wonder
I jumped at the first chance to get away (all the
way to Paris)!  On the other hand, I'm now
in a position to appreciate the swell selection
of shadows to be found around here.

Skywatch Friday

Took this from the train when I was
on my way to visit my mom.  I just hope
this guy didn't fall asleep on this gorgeous
day and miss his ride to the beach.

Ruby Tuesday

I found this thing in my mom's garden.
She didn't plant it (she's 92, and a bad back
has made planting anything off-limits for a
few years now).  So this patch pretty much tends
itself—except for a bit of weeding done by me,
who can't always tell a weed from a wisteria.
I think it looks like a mutant raspberry.
Anyone know its true identity?

abc Wednesday—S is for "surfers"

It's just about that time of year again—
time to head out to Montauk, lounge on
the beach, and watch other (okay, younger)
people risk drowning or a concussion!

Sunset in Suburbia

A gorgeous Long Island sunset—I took
this shot from my mom's kitchen window,
in the house I grew up in.

abc wednesday —Z is for . . .

. . . zombie hunter??  Well, I guess we all need
a hobby.  Or maybe it's a career—if so, I'm glad
I didn't spot this car in my neighborhood!
