Whirlybird

One morning recently as I took my usual
walk over the Brooklyn Bridge,
I was accompanied by this police helicopter 
that circled the bridge the whole time.
It was hovering in place when I took this shot—
must say, it made me feel safe . . .
and also creeped me out.  I kept wondering
just what it was looking for.

I may not have a lot of hair (perpetual
pixie cut)—but my daughters definitely do

from their father's side of the family, probably)!

It's true love (or something)

Or maybe another major case of
"monkey see, monkey do."  I've been seeing ribbons
along with the love locks on the Brooklyn Bridge
for a while now.  One day, someone didn't
have a ribbon and decided to use his headphones
instead.  And now . . .

ABC Wednesday—X is for "extraordinary extending machine"

They've been working on the Brooklyn Bridge
for years now.  Recently, I saw these guys
under the bridge.  Not sure exactly what they
were doing with this excellent piece of
equipment—I just saw X's!

the last time I returned home 
from a trip down to Virginia.  (And if I'd

I could have seen my apartment building
just then as we flew over Brooklyn.)

ABC Wednesday—U is for (dead) "umbrella"

Just like the owner of this sad thing, I decided 
to walk over the Brooklyn Bridge despite
the rain.  But I knew not to try to use an umbrella.  
It can get mighty windy up there!

I usually forgo my morning walk over the
Brooklyn Bridge when the temps
dip down to the low 20s F (with wind chills
in the teens), but I did walk this
week—and it wasn't so bad, especially
with that bright sun shining down.

ABC Wednesday—B is for "bridges"

Why I choose my seat carefully when booking 
a flight back home from Virginia: the hope 
of getting this view.  That's the Brooklyn Bridge 
(my daily commute) on the left, the
Manhattan Bridge on the right.

Which came first?

Ever since some kids climbed up to the
top of the Brooklyn Bridge one
night and painted the American flag white,
there's been a constant police presence up there.  

So I wonder where they were when someone
tiptoed out across a girder over the
roadway (think Meg Ryan in Kate and Leopold)
and tied those balloons to a cable at the edge.
I also wonder whether all that caution tape
was put at that spot before or after they were added.

balloons on the bridge

Who left this bouquet of balloons here?
I haven't the foggiest notion, but
they definitely cheered up my morning walk 
over the Brooklyn Bridge—and they were 
gone the next day (released, not popped, I hope).

Last week was Fashion Week here in NYC,
and one day I encountered three photo shoots on my 
morning commute over the Brooklyn Bridge.
This model reminded me of a whirling dervish . . .

she was beautiful, graceful, and fierce.

Weekend Reflections

One of many art installations set up around
the city for the summer, this is
Tom Fruin's Kolonihavehus, 2010.
Fruin used about 1,000 locally sourced scraps
of colorful Plexiglas in the construction.

Whoever lived in this glass house would
have a spectacular view of the Brooklyn Bridge!

L'heure bleu

One night last week it was finally warm enough
(i.e., just slightly above freezing) to walk
over the Brooklyn Bridge.  Though it was dark by the time
I got to the other side, it was my favorite time of 
day—the blue hour—when I started across.

ABC Wednesday—B is for "Batman on the Brooklyn Bridge"

No, it was not Halloween.
No, it was not a photo shoot.
No, Robin wasn't there.
I have no explanation for Batman's presence
on the Brooklyn Bridge on that random
Friday in September—except to say "Hey, this
is New York Gotham City!"
