Ruby Tuesday

I visited a huge indoor flea market recently, and
the thing I really wanted to buy was this
beautiful old antique dollhouse. (I didn't get it—
it was $400 for one thing.)  On the other hand ...

It was completely furnished!

Hair today . . .

I was walking around my Brooklyn neighborhood
when I spotted this woman with very
interesting blue "hair." (And what would I
do with this photo if I didn't have a blog?)

Shadow Shot Sunday

Last week I featured some "feather trees" on this
sun-drenched patio.  Fortunately, they also
have some strategically placed umbrellas.

The Weekend in Black and White

This is my absolute dead fave piece of sculpture in the
world: The Nike of Samothrace, aka Winged Victory.
I fell in love with her the very first time I walked
into the Louvre—almost (ahem) 50 years ago.
But she's even older than I am; it's estimated that
she was created about 2,200 (and 1) years ago!

Skywatch Friday/Weekend Reflections

Somewhere the sky touches the earth,
and the name of that place is the end.
                      —Wakamba saying

So what is it called when the sky lives in the river?

Thursday Challenge—"symmetry"

All lined up at a flea market: these
water-bearing putti and big, fat planters.
I think this image fits the challenge . . .

ABC Wednesday—B is for "beautiful boy"

And he lives in Brooklyn. I've featured young
Lukas here before (he was brand new the first time).
I think he just grows more beautiful, and his personal

photographer/"auntie" (my daughter Lila) agrees!

Ruby Tuesday

To me, red and white circles say Target,
but actually, this is the current midtown
Manhattan Louis Vuitton window display.
Anybody want to guess what it means?

Mellow Yellow Monday

A quiet creek in Virginia was the perfect place
for me to escape my usual NYC insanity for a while.
This post really is yellow—and mellow!

Shadow Shot Sunday

These look exactly like the 7-foot feather tree
that I used to have in my office (back before
we all "graduated" from an office to a
cubicle).  Interesting, but if you were looking
for a bit of shade on this hot, hot day . . .

The Weekend in Black and White

For some reason, I used to think that
plants made poor subjects for shooting
in black and white. I've changed my mind.

Skywatch Friday

The sun is lighting up the clouds
behind what used to be New York's tallest
building (and first skyscraper), the
Woolworth Building (in the center)—and on the
right our newest skyscraper and now tallest building,
the not-yet-completed One World Trade Center.

Thursday Challenge—"supreme"

When I considered this challenge, my first thoughts were
of manmade things—ever taller NYC skyscrapers,
the Eiffel Tower, the city of Venice—but then I realized
it had to be the Grand Canyon (beautifully captured here
by my daughter Lila).  This indescribable place
is one of Mother Nature's masterpieces.

ABC Wednesday—A is for "atheists"

In NYC, atheists advertise—and some
of them are into good bluegrass music.
And they have a website. To each
his own, I say, but I did kind of want to
ask this guy if he ever says OMG.

[I'm starting my 4th round of ABC Wednesday,
and this is my 183rd ABC post.  If you

Ruby Tuesday

This is not the only monk I've encountered
while crossing the Brooklyn Bridge—
but as this one passed me, he gave me a big
grin and a high five (and a nice start to my day)!

Mellow Yellow Monday

I was having dinner recently on the terrace
of a restaurant in Soho, near this fairly
new art installation. People never stopped
coming by and posing with it. You can see a
closeup and learn more about it here, in the Villager.

Shadow Shot Sunday

This is where I go when I visit my
Virginia cousins. What you don't see

here are the horses behind that fence and a
beautiful lake. What you do see: shadows!

Allons, Enfants!

It's Bastille Day, so this had to be a photo from Paris.
When I first moved there (as a teenager), I got around town
like all good Parisians did with the help of the wonderful little
red Guide Indispensable.  Well, I'm now far from being a
teenager and tiny type is not my friend. These days

when I go back I rely on Michael Middleditch's
Paris Map Guide—which is both compact and easy to read.

Skywatch Friday

Last week, it was a real sauna
around here.  This week, though,
the weather has been perfect—with
bright blue skies and balmy breezes.
Hope you're enjoying the same where you are!

Thursday Challenge—"movement"

Credit for this one goes to my daughter Lila.
She and her sister, Katie, were in the park
playing with the glow-in-the-dark hula hoop.
This little girl asked if she could play—
and showed off some mad skills!

ABC Wednesday—Z is for "Zac"

Hey, two birthday photos in a row.
April works in my office and she has a
bit of a "thing" for Zac Posen.  So some
of her coworkers decorated her cubicle
after hours—and when she came in on her
birthday the next day, this is what she found!

Ruby Tuesday

This très chic Parisienne strolling by
the Hotel de Ville is actually my hip
NYC-born-and-bred daughter Lila, whose
birthday is today—bon anniversaire, Sweetie!

them in full glorious bloom but
also when they're bowing out, like this.

Shadow Shot Sunday

These talented hands belong to Noam Pikelny,
who played in a free bluegrass concert
here in NYC on July 4th. Temp was way up in
the 90s (as usual), but we were all chillin'.

The Weekend in Black and White

These ferns were a gorgeous
shade of bright green and very
soft to the touch.  But shot in b and w,
don't they almost look like metal?

here this past week—but we've
also had some gorgeous skies.

where you are?

Thursday Challenge—"beverage"

"A bottle of red, a bottle of white—
it all depends upon your appetite.
I'll meet you any time you want
in our Italian restaurant."

(Or, in this case, our French restaurant.)

abc Wednesday—Y = "yay!"

This past weekend all 35,000+ photos disappeared
from my computer—yikes!  After 4 hours on the
phone with Apple, they had to cry "Uncle" and send me
back to where I bought my computer.  Long story short:
Potential disaster averted by this young man and his
talented colleagues.  But if I hadn't had an external hard
drive, I would have lost everything.  Hope you have one!

Ruby Tuesday

These fifers are performing in Boston's
Granary Burying Ground. It's the final
resting place of three signers of the
Declaration of Independence, five victims
of the Boston Massacre—and Paul Revere.

Also buried here is the woman
some claim is Mother Goose.
Hope all my compatriots enjoy
the 4th tomorrow!

Om

I always have this tiny (3/8-inch square) silver box
with me.  Inside is a slip of paper with these Sanskrit
words: Lokha Samasta Sukhino Bavhantu—
a prayer for peace for all beings everywhere.

In the Shade

It was 99°F (37°C) here on Friday and has stayed
up in the 90s all weekend.  I don't care much for
air-conditioning, but I've definitely been walking
on the shady side of the street (and chilled for a while
under the trees in "my" beautiful Botanic Garden).

[It's Shadow Shot Sunday. To see more, go here.

Paris Encore blog, if you'd like to check it out.**]
