abc wednesday — P is for "pyramids"

and also Paris, since these are the ones in
front of the Louvre.  I know they were
controversial at first, but I've
always loved them.  How about you?
(Thought I took this picture, but now I see
myself in it, so credit goes to my daughter Lila.)

  1. I have always liked the pyramids, though they do 'clash' wiith the rest of the Louvre's architecture. I love them inside and out.

  2. If Paris is to be transformed in ways Eric has hinted at in his post today I should hope that it will be a mesh of old and new as well done as was done at the Louvre by I.M. Pei.

  4. I remember all the huge controversy 20 years ago !
Yes, 20 years already, the opening took place around March or April 1989 !! It aged well, I think.
People have been making such silly comments for months: its cost, it would "destroy" the soul of the old Paris, the fact that Pei refused the first choice of wood because there were knots on the planks that would appear on the concrete .... every thing was on the newspapers.
But once I managed to get in (after 3 attemps and hours of lines), I was captivated : the light, the space, the color of the concrete : when visiting the "Louvre Médiéval" I hardly didn't notice the transition between concrete and old stones and I remember saying at that moment that it was a success.
sorry for this long comment, hope I made myself clear enough ...

  5. There will always be controversy over new buildings. And then in 100 years, everybody will like it and hate the new stuff going up.
I like them, even though I've yet to see them up close.

  6. I love the glass pyramid! When I was a student living in Paris I used to ride the metro and do my homework in front of it! I felt so lucky and blessed to have that opportunity!

  7. How beautiful! {Nice shot, Lila!} And imagine the furore when Parisians first learned of the plans for the Eiffel Tower - thank goodness they went ahead regardless!

    By the way: Pointy-topped doodad! {And you thought I was joking about the keyrings!}

  8. I think it looks more impressive at night, but I am no fan of the Great P. It's too jarring, which is why I suppose most people like it. It's almost sacrilegious, but then I suppose my neighbors felt the same way when the apartment building where I now reside was built!

  9. Your comment was crystal clear, Marylene, and much appreciated (as are they all)!

Shell -- wow! To think that I will have my very own PTDD key ring! (And, yes, I did think you were kidding.)

Gotta say, the pyramid works for me because you can see through it. The only thing I truly detest in Paris is the horrid Tour Montparnasse. If only there was a way to throw an invisibility shield around it!

  11. They actually look very nice and it is difficult to remember the courtyard without them (although I saw that many times as a kid).
