Bowery Mission

These good folks have been feeding the
hungry and homeless for 131 years. I
found them just outside Tomkins Square
Park, in the East Village. I love their
"street" paraphrasing of Matthew 4:19
on the hood of the truck (when I checked
this chapter and verse it read, "And he said
to them, 'Come, follow me, and I will make
you fishers of men.'").

  1. Well, that certainly is a different interpretation of "fishers of men!" Someone once gave me a modern-text Bible, and I had trouble reading it...

More power to the Bowery people, though.

  2. How wonderful - both their mission and their catch-y interpretation. ;)

  3. There is so much to do, it is glad that there are also so many people willing to help, everywhere, in France like in the US.

My only concern is that some persons could take advantage of their "power" or position to enforce their beliefs, we have had some bad examples some times ago.

I spend most of my time in one of those associations. The first paper we sign when we arrive is a "charte", that says, among other things, that we HAVE to keep a total independence towards any political or religous subject.
And I think it is important, it is a proof, if necessary, that there are no ulterior motives, no other motivation that providing food and help.
I hope no one will feel offended by my comment, very hard to express my feelings in English.

  4. Marylene -- the word for what your association does not do is "proselytize," and I don't think these people do either, I'm glad to say.
