Another memory

Not long after Sept. 11, these tiles showed
up on a fence in Greenwich Village.
The fence is no longer there and I'm not
sure what happened to the tiles,
but I hope they've been kept safe somewhere
(maybe they're in the 9/11 museum).

Squad 18

The friendly firefighters on West 10th Street
in the West Village were feeling the
pride and sharing the love on Sunday, as
NYC's huge gay pride parade took
place a block away from their firehouse.

Grove Court

Fairly high up on my list of "places I could
probably stand to live" would be one of the six little
mid-19th-century townhouses in this über-charming
courtyard in the West Village.  The neighbors must
need to get along (at least enough to agree on a
single color for all those shutters and
what to plant in the flower bed) . . .

but at least they don't have to
worry about the riffraff getting in.
(Ironically, when these were built
they were low-end housing.)

Shadow Shot Sunday

On a recent rare sunny (and warm!) day,
I took a stroll in the West Village
and stopped by the school my kids attended
for 10 years.  It's attached to this church,
St. Luke in the Fields—so named because when
it was built, it was the "country" parish of
Trinity, the "city" church at the top of Wall Street.

Skywatch Friday

Took this looking northeast across the rooftops
of Soho and the eastern edge of Greenwich Village.
Those tall white buildings on the right belong to NYU,
and the red one too—but then pretty much
everything in this neighborhood does.

ABC Wednesday—H is for "hookah"

Passed this restaurant on LaGuardia Place, in the
Village, recently.  I'm seeing more and more
places where you can top off your meal
with a few drags on a water pipe.
Is this a trend where you live as well?

New York at Night 18

You know how the credits roll for about 10 minutes
at the end of a movie?  Well, all of those people
 use
lots of equipment, even when they're shooting
on location.  Was walking in the Village one night recently
and there were film trucks lined up for blocks.
At the end of the line was this one, the wardrobe truck.

Ruby Tuesday

With so many people marching in our annual
Halloween parade, there are some amazing
costumes—but I just liked this guy's style.

[To see more Ruby Tuesday, go here.]

He was joined later by about 50,000 fellow revelers
(and I was just as happy to be 10 flights up!).

Walk in the Street

Found this painter and his subjects in Washington
Square Park—from the look on that woman's face, I'm
thinking these folks have been posing here for a while!

They do!

Given the historic legislation passed last week, Sunday's Gay Pride parade
was one big celebration—and it was huge!  (And forced me to be
uncharacteristically pushy to get these shots.)  I loved those guys
with the sign that read, "Thirty Years Engaged. Let's Get Married!"
They got a wonderful, warm response from the crowd.
[I'm linking back to That's My World. To see more of the world, go here.]
No, I did not take this photo.  A lot of people
thought this was done specifically after the
passage of the Marriage Equality Act—
but the Empire State Building was lit
up like this all week for Gay Pride.

That's My World

We're looking through the open windows of
Chez Jacqueline, a cozy Provençale restaurant in
—no, not Provençe—Greenwich Village.  Care to join me?

Ay, Caramba!

A corner of Maracas Mexican restaurant, where they know
how to have a good time—the crowd is lively, the waitresses
(waiters?) are in drag, and the food is way more than typical.

Photo Hunter — "half"

I like to link my posts back to a meme
(like this one)—it's fun to see what others
have done and it's usually a challenge.
But this one was such a challenge that I almost
gave up and didn't post anything for "half."
Then Wednesday night I was in the Village  and
saw this. May not be the most fascinating (or most beautiful)
picture, but that's definitely half a couch (or two
halves of one)! I have to wonder why (and how) they did that.
Just realized that I've been inspired by
tossed-out furniture before.

[You can head over here to see how others
interpreted this one.]

Mellow Yellow Monday

Want some good Mexican food in a spot
where it's all happening?  You can even eat
alfresco here at Caliente Cab Co., at the
corner of Bleecker and 7th Ave.,
in Greenwich Village.

mellow Yellow Monday

This is Raffetto's. It's been in business since 1906,
and more than 100 years in this little store on Houston
Street, in the Village. It's now the 3rd generation of the
family making the most amazing pasta and ravioli.
Most of their business is wholesale (to many of NYC's
best food stores and restaurants), so I'm glad
they continue to run the shop—and I hope they're
here for another century!

Checkmate

This place on Thompson St. in the Village
is a bit of an institution. I haven't played in so
long I'd have to learn all over again,
but I love the chess sets they
sell here.  Do you play?

Shadow Shot Sunday

Found this young couple entertaining
a pretty decent crowd one warm evening last
month under the Washington Square
arch. My guess? They're either poor kids
trying to keep a roof over their
heads, or NYU students hoping to get
a Starbucks latte without dipping
into their allowance.

a downtown Christmas

. . . from a comic-book store on Thompson St.,
in the Village.  As the man says . . . abide!
(And may I add relax . . . and enjoy!)

smart bird

Personally, I wouldn't dream of feeding
one of these lousy (as in pigeon lice)
birds, but this one knows that the sign
won't keep any self-respecting New
Yorker from tossing him a piece of their
bagel if they really want to. P.S., NYC is
full of pretty little pocket parks like this
one—Jackson Square, in the West Village.
