and the winner is . . .

One more shot from the Saratoga Racetrack.
Lots of horses got scratched from
the races held this wet day, but the "mudders"
weren't bothered a bit by the weather.
I was betting mostly on the jockeys, but put my
money on Downtown Mama for this one,
just because I liked her name.

some for me, some for you

. . . and it looks like the pigeons have learned that
this sweet horse knows how to share.
There's a group of people who are fighting to ban
horse-drawn carriages in the city—and
I can't say I disagree that this is no life for these
animals (especially in extreme weather).
When I walk along  Central Park South, I have
to pet (and maybe get a nice nuzzle
from) some of these hardworking horses.

Along the fence

There are fences . . .  and there are fences.  If you
walk along this one, you just might make a friend—
especially if you carry peppermints in your pocket.

Shadow Shot Sunday

This is where I go when I visit my
Virginia cousins. What you don't see

here are the horses behind that fence and a
beautiful lake. What you do see: shadows!

That's Our World

Normally, my world is the  concrete streets of
Manhattan—but today it's Virginia horse country.
Can you see that these beautiful horses
are growing their winter coats?

Mellow Yellow Monday

Welcome to the Virginia Horse Center, where you'll
find beautiful animals and elegant riders
(and folks with a sense of humor!).

Photo Hunt — "alive"

This beautiful animal is a "retired" show horse.
She's earned her retirement, and is living the good life in the
Virginia countryside—and she's still very much alive!

Thursday Challenge: Soft

I was going through my photo archives
looking for shots of big fluffy clouds—then
I remembered what it feels like
to touch a horse's muzzle. C'mon, you
know you want to reach right out
and pet that velvety nose!

[You'll find more softness here.]

peek-a-boo

Last weekend, I went to see friends
who breed, raise, and show the most
beautiful horses—even their
barn is gorgeous.

Happy Birthday to . . .

. . . 2009—and also to all thoroughbred horses,
whose birthday is Jan. 1 no matter when they were
born.  This is Rosie and her mom, who live on the
gorgeous horse farm next door to where I'm
staying—heaven for a former 10-year-old obsessed
with horses (who never totally got over it).
