Well, c'mon—what could ever be more important to me than my children? Here are Katie and Lila, circa 1985 . . . |
and not quite 30 years later. [To see more of the Thursday Photo Challenge, visit Dale's meme.] |

I thought I'd use a photo from Paris or Venice or Rome—but finally decided to share this shot of my daughter Lila reacting to her first up-close encounter with the locals in Antarctica. It was taken by her sister, Katie, when they traveled there last year. [To see more of the Thursday Photo Challenge, visit Dale's meme.] |
This one is borrowed from my daughter Lila, who took it when she and her sister, Katie, were celebrating the New Year on this island off the coast of Honduras. [To see more Skywatch posts, go here. For more Weekend Reflections, visit James's meme.] |
These wet women are my intrepid daughters, who took the challenge and went for a swim (more like a quick dip) in Antarctica. Granted, it was summer—but still . . . (and yes, those are penguins back there). [To see more of the Thursday Photo Challenge, go here.] |
This photo of my daughter Lila was taken by her loving younger sister, Katie—whose birthday is today. Here's the turn-around shot of the beautiful b-day girl, featured lately on my other blog. [To see more shots that feature the letter L, visit Tina's Picstory.] |
This one is compliments of my daughters, Lila and Kate (because I'm not sure which one of them had this camera just then)—it's the setting (but just barely) sun lighting up a mountaintop in Antarctica. I wondered how many people actually get to enjoy this sight and it turns out to be quite a few, considering: More than 37,000 people now travel to Antarctica every year (up from about 12,000 per year in 2001). [To see more light, visit Tina's Picstory. You'll see some more "worldly" posts at Our World Tuesday and Traveling Tuesday.] |
My daughter Kate, who took this picture in Antarctica recently, explained to me that the reason glaciers are partly blue is because the ice absorbs all colors except blue—which it reflects. |
Here's what it looks like from farther away. [To see more macros, visit Lisa's Chaos. To see more Blue Monday shots, see Smiling Sally's meme]. |

I may have to give you a break from my photos and let you enjoy a few of the hundreds that have been parked on my computer by my peripatetic daughters, who have recently returned from a fabulous trip to Antarctica by way of Buenos Aires. These excellent shadows were shot by Lila in BA's Recoleta Cemetery. [It's Shadow Shot Sunday. To see more, go here.] |
I chose this photo (taken by my daughter Katie) for today for a few reasons: It's up above the Arctic Circle and that makes me think "cold" and that reminds me that today is the first day of winter; it's barely 20 degrees from the North Pole and that makes me think of Santa, who'll be here soon; and in one week Katie and her sister Lila will be headed in the polar opposite (so to speak) direction on their way to Antarctica! Credit for this one goes to my daughter Lila. She and her sister, Katie, were in the park playing with the glow-in-the-dark hula hoop. This little girl asked if she could play— and showed off some mad skills! [To see more of the Thursday Photo Challenge, go here.] |
For this photo challenge it wasn't hard for me to choose what I find beautiful—my daughters, of course! (The backdrop here is not too shabby, either, so I wish I could say I took this shot.) [To see more things that are beautiful, go here.] |
