PhotoHunt — "point"

The Montauk Lighthouse sits on a point
of land at the easternmost tip of Long
Island.  Next stop due east: Portugal.

  1. Beautiful... somewhere in Portugal on the other side is probably a lighthouse, too! ;<)

  2. A lighthouse, flag at half-mast...

May it light up a certain songbird’s way, if she is so disposed.

Bibi’s comment brought to mind a pre-electric telegraph system. They were an interesting plot device in The Count of Monte Cristo. In this case, however, we might call the trans-Atlantic lighthouses a kind of heliograph. They were quite useful but you had to point them in the right direction. I wonder what they would communicate. “Dude, this is so cool. Unlimited nighttime minutes for free!”
