Today's Flowers

I know these don't look much like flowers

right now.  But in two or three months
the frozen buds on this dogwood tree outside
my window will burst into bloom and

the tree will be covered with pink blossoms.
Meanwhile . . .

Weekend Reflections

Last Saturday, it snowed—again.
Sunday morning everything was encased in ice.
Then the sun came out and it all began to melt.
Unfortunately, by Monday morning this

puddle was solid ice—again.

It won't be too long

. . . I hope.  I'm getting pretty sick of this frigid

weather—a wind chill of -7°F (-22°C) when I woke
up on Friday—and am looking forward
to daffodils popping up and flowering trees
like this one coming into bloom.  (I took this shot
on March 17 a few years ago, but that was a

much milder winter than the one we're having; I'll
be curious to see when it blooms this year.)

The Weekend in Black and White

It was early—and chilly.  But right now I'd be
willing to bundle up if I could park myself there.

Brrrr!

I've had enough of bundling up to
deal with this Arctic cold—with lots of
snow and, yesterday, freezing rain—and am so
ready to wear skirts and cute shoes again!
What's the weather like where you are?

Weekend Reflections

I recently traveled from Virginia to NYC on
the train (where business class is actually
affordable and you don't have to remove your
shoes before you board).  I found this somber
winter reflection just outside Washington, D.C.

Back on the Bridge

We had a few just-nice-enough mornings
and the bridge beckoned with blue skies
and long shadows—then it snowed again. But
soon enough I'll be able to do this every day.

Shadow Shot Sunday

When I went to visit my "backyard" garden (Brooklyn
Botanic) recently on a sunny but very cold day, it may
have been the very first time I was able to take photos in the
pretty little lakeside pavilion of their Japanese garden
with not another soul around to wander into my shot.

country sunrise

Another gorgeous morning in Virginia.
The show didn't last long—I had to run out in my
jammies to get this shot.  Fortunately, the nearest
neighbors are some very nonjudgmental horses.

Waaay Up North

I chose this photo (taken by my daughter Katie)
for today for a few reasons:  It's up above the Arctic
Circle and that makes me think "cold" and that
reminds me that today is the first day of winter;
it's barely 20 degrees from the North Pole
and that makes me think of Santa, who'll
be here soon; and in one week Katie and her
sister Lila will be headed in the polar opposite
(so to speak) direction on their way to Antarctica!

Skywatch Friday

The sun was making a valiant effort to
break through on this overcast winter day,
but I'm afraid it was a losing battle.
Am I ever ready for spring!

Snow Job

I keep posting pictures of snow and saying this
is the last of it. Maybe this time it's true.
Some of us (mainly grown-ups) are pretty sick
of the white stuff, but it did make for
some fine sledding and snow-fort-building
in Prospect Park this past weekend.

That's My World Tuesday

And recently my world has been all about the
snow. Took this a week ago, early in the
A.M., from my bedroom window. What melts
as soon as it hits the ground in Manhattan stays
around for a week in Brooklyn. Was
hoping that this was the last snow 0f 2009,
but I hear we may be in for a bit more this week.

skywatch Friday

It was frigid when I took this shot, and there was
snow on the ground. But I feel like you'd know
that even if I didn't tell you—somehow, this picture
just says "winter" to me.

abc wednesday - B is for "berries"

When I was down in Virginia recently, it was
VERY cold—which made waking up to the sight
of this beautiful little holly tree
right outside my window even more special.

country roads revisited

I showed you this in the summer, but
here it is again, seen through the slats of the
old fence—and just as beautiful
in the cold, I think.

icy

I hear (through my fave blog, Paris Daily Photo)
that it's freezing in Paris right now—
and we've had a bit of a cold snap
ourselves this weekend.
At least we haven't had our gas heat
cut off by the Russians!
