Mellow Yellow Monday

Oh boy—stinky tofu!
Came across a street fair under the
Manhattan Bridge, where they seemed
to be featuring Taiwanese street food.
I'd never tried stinky tofu (and still
haven't!). What's the strangest thing
you ever ate?

  1. Although I've eaten tofu in the past I don't think I'd ever eat this "stinky tofu" just because of its name.
I wish I was more exotic in my food tasting experiences, but sadly I can't think of having eaten anything strange.

  2. Never heard of stinky tofu. Noticed a couple sentences in the link: "From a distance, the odor of stinky tofu is said to resemble that of rotten garbage or manure, even by its enthusiasts. In some instances the taste has even been compared to rotten meat.” Big deal. I get that every time I open my refrigerator.

I suppose durian is the favored desert. (Travel and food writer Richard Sterling says of durian:
“... its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away.” Anthony Bourdain about durian: ...Your breath will smell as if you'd been French-kissing your dead grandmother."). It’s OK once in one’s mouth. (I don’t mean a deceased grandmother’s putrefacting tongue. I mean durian).

I came to like fermented soy beans, or natto. Had some chocolate covered ants when I was ten. At a Bangkok street stall I had a noodle dish with cubes of curdled blood.

But I’m just killing time here. I wanna try stinky tofu! Thanks for letting us know about it, Alexa. I’m headed to Chinatown like a bat outa hell. Oops. An unfortunate turn of phrase.

  4. Yikes—what have I started?? Never ate bat (I hope), but did discover (after then fact) that I had eaten dog at a Vietnamese restaurant in Paris.

  5. Stinky tofu doesn't sound very good....I do wonder what it is....

Strangest thing I ate was in Cameroon....'vipere,' they called it, though I'm not sure it was poisonous, just one of those large, long, fat snakes.

  6. Ah, viper. That can make for a good meal. As one is making for here.

  7. After reading this: “Some less scrupulous stinky tofu factories in China reportedly used rotten kitchen waste, chemical dye and human feces to prepare the brine in order to achieve the odor and texture in a short period of time.” Could you eat this?

  8. Dog, Alexa? That is so last year. The A-list sophisticated Texas elite have gone way beyond that now to this.

  9. Is that anything like poopy tuna???

    {Excuse me while I visit David Lebovitz for a while to cleanse my head of some of these images. :) }

  11. TG -- you made my morning! Though I'm strangely not in the mood for breakfast anymore. I ate blood sausage all the time when I was in Paris, and had something concocted out of chicken blood in Bordeaux. On the other hand, we went to Chinatown for dim sum yesterday and I passed on 2 different kinds of tripe. Okay, now I need to head over to David Lebovitz's place too.

  12. OK, who is David Lebovitz? I suddenly feel compelled to check him out.
I actually came back here to report on something I ate that I think might be a little strange - Eels!
I'm pretty sure they were smoked & I remember them tasting like chicken. I can still see my Dad cutting them down the middle & pulling out the meat. It was so rustic.
    TG, you are too funny!
