The Plaza

Things have changed a bit here, since it
was built 102 years ago, and a single room
cost a whopping $2.50 a night!  Apparently,
the Vanderbilts were the first to sign the
register.  Now, you can't even get a cup of tea
in the Palm Court for $2.50.  Even so, I still
like to come here and channel Eloise and her
turtle, Skipperdee.

  2. Checking Wikipedia I see that the same $2.50 room now goes for $3,750, or $26,250 for a week’s stay. Yes, NY is definitely intimidating.

I wonder if Eloise will bring her pug dog Weenie (speaking of pointy-topped doo-dads) to Paris this year.

Especially the roof lines of this, the Plaza, and your lower photo of Tuesday, March 24, 2009 have me thinking that such landmarks are about as close to the quality historical continuity of a European city such as Paris as we here in the States can get. Thanks for showing us these architectural gems, Alexa. (Even, or especially, those buildings with water towers that have been so strongly influenced by USElaine’s Willits which is from a completely different geographical direction but that holds an equal quality of soul).

  3. That's the place I would stay if I were to splurge. Wasn't this the local for the Home Alone movie?

I've written a comment about gypsies and stealing on my blog today---check it out.

Also, if you want to arrange with Lily that we all meet this summer, go right ahead!!

  4. Shell -- I hadn't even realized there are PTDD's up there! (And I've been on the lookout for sure.)

TG -- Great linkage, comme toujours! I remember that photo of Elaine's, so maybe it was stored there in the back of my brain, and Shell should thank her for the current crop of PTDD's.

bibi -- Yes, Home Alone 2, and he stayed in room 411. (btw, interesting stuff about the gypies—thx!)

  6. Won't you like to be a fly on the wall during those times?

I'm always curious about how people back them act, especially with such strict social etiquette imposed on everyone.
