Monday Mellow Yellows

I saw these guys entertaining the crowd
in front of the Plaza Hotel (or
condo or co-op or whatever it is now).
Hope all of you here in the States are having
a sunny Memorial Day weekend.

Mellow Yellow Monday

This is the famous Palm Court at the
Plaza Hotel. Apparently it's closed until early
2010 (so sometime soon). I can
definitely recommend the afternoon tea
service here—you'll feel just like Eloise.

Pulitzer Fountain

Built with the $50,000 bequeathed by the publisher
for a fountain like "those in the Place de la Concorde in Paris."
The bronze statue depicts Pomona, the Roman goddess
of abundance. There are ram's heads and horns of plenty to
further emphasize the theme of wealth. So I suppose it's
fitting that this fountain is located right in front of the Plaza Hotel.

The Plaza

Things have changed a bit here, since it
was built 102 years ago, and a single room
cost a whopping $2.50 a night!  Apparently,
the Vanderbilts were the first to sign the
register.  Now, you can't even get a cup of tea
in the Palm Court for $2.50.  Even so, I still
like to come here and channel Eloise and her
turtle, Skipperdee.
