Mark says . ..

I'm not sure who Mark is, but I have
to agree with this bit of advice.
This sign was in a restaurant—and, actually,
I did not eat dessert first, but that's
only because I was there for breakfast.

ABC Wednesday—N is for "night"

And also for northern New Jersey, which is
what I could see all lit up at midnight as
we made our way up the coast from NC to NY.

The Garden State

Actually, some parts of New Jersey are truly
beautiful—this, however, is not one of them.  The

refineries along this stretch don't exactly
smell like a garden either, but for now I guess
they're still a necessary evil.  After
all, I took this shot from a plane fueled
by what's down there.

(And, yet again, would it kill them to
clean the windows on the plane?)

Mellow Yellow Monday

Flew back from Virginia last night, and they had us in a
holding pattern for a while, circling over the industrial parts of
New Jersey (so ugly at ground level in the daytime and yet so
beautiful from up here at night).  I amused myself by trying
(as always) to get a really clear shot at many thousands of feet

and 500 mph—even though I know it's pretty much impossible.

From Here to . . .

Yes, I did it again (forgot to turn off one of my
electronic gadgets during takeoff).  From bottom
to top: New Jersey, lower Manhattan, Brooklyn,
Atlantic Ocean . . . and straight on to Italy!

Skywatch Friday

I do love a New Jersey sunset—all those chemicals just add to
the drama!  And, yes, that is the Statue of Liberty there on the left.

[You can see more Skywatch—or post one of your own—here.]

Skywatch Friday

Last week I told you that if you hung around Rockefeller Park in lower
Manhattan, you'd catch a spectacular sunset.  Well, I did—and here it is.

Skywatch Friday

This should probably be called "Smogwatch" Friday!
Took this from the Brooklyn Bridge early on an
overcast morning.  Made me want to hurry to my
airless office—or buy an oxygen mask.  We're
no doubt breathing this stuff in every day—scary!

view from the ferry

Took this from the ferry landing on the Staten Island
side (first time for this borough, I think).  The tall buildings
on the left are New Jersey, on the right Manhattan—with
the Statue of Liberty in between. Last time I rode the
ferry, it was snowing.  It amazes (and pleases)
me that it's still free!

Skywatch Friday

This was taken from the Hearst Building
(where I used to work), looking southwest
across the Hudson River and over New Jersey.
My mother has an expression that she hauls
out to explain any otherwise inexplicable
phenomena: It's all done with chemicals.
I believe it applies here.

skywatch Friday

Oh, I do love to watch the sun set over
New Jersey. Somehow, all those chemicals
that they're cooking over there really
add to the whole effect.

lone jogger

And it was about 30°F out there along the Hudson.
Those folks across the river in New Jersey
have an amazing view!

power to the people

Wouldn't it be nice if all that electricity
came from something that looks like . . .
this instead? Oh well, gotta juice the
computer to keep this up.

N.J.

Is it just perception, or is this really what
New Jersey looks like?  Well, parts of the
state are downright bucolic.  But this IS
also the Jersey I know (it's a little
film noir-ish, no?).

Skywatch Friday

Not exactly a "let's go somewhere on Friday" shot.
More like a "just been somewhere" photo.
Came across this skywatch concept on someone's blog and
thought this picture might fit the idea. Coming home
at dusk, and have just flown over my house.
