hangin' in

When most of the tulips in the garden
were fading fast, some cultivars
were still going strong—
including these
ruffly red and cream beauties.

'Burning Heart'

That's the well-chosen name of this two-tone
Darwin hybrid tulip—just one of
dozens of tulips in bloom right now at
the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (aka my 'backyard'.)

nothing lasts forever

Recently, two of my favorite cousins came
to visit and they brought me
these beautiful tulips to welcome spring.

Oh well, they were lovely
while they lasted.

Thursday Challenge—"multicolored (2)"

And this is less than half of one tulip border
in bloom right now in my fave garden.

Today's Flowers

There are dozens of different tulip
cultivars blooming right now in
the botanic garden.  I think my faves are
these ruffly, romantic parrot tulips.

Stunning!

Today's Flowers

There are more than 6,000 tulips in bloom

in the loooong annual border at
the Brooklyn Botanic Garden right now.
With mostly yellow and orange and white cultivars
this year,
 these (called 'Pittsburgh') stood out.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mamas out there!

Thursday Challenge—"beautiful"

Hard to choose a photo for this one, because

with so much blooming right now the
whole city looks beautiful—including the traffic
median that runs down the middle of Park Avenue.

Thursday Challenge—"bright"

How about a bright-pink tulip
to brighten up a dreary winter day?

Thursday Challenge—"flowers"

So hard to choose an image from among the many
beautiful flowers I've photographed at the
Brooklyn Botanic Garden.  Finally, I just went
eeny-meeny-miny-mo—and came up with these.

'Black Hero'

That's the name of this tulip cultivar.
The color of the flower is true, but I did have a
bit of fun with the background in photoshop.
(It may be just as well that I don't know
how to do much with it—if I did, I'd be playing
with it all night and never get anything done!)

The first thing you see . . .

when you walk in the main gate of the
Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a huge circular
planter filled with dozens and dozens of
pink and red tulips. (What's just out of view
are the dozens of people posing in front of it.)

Pink Saturday

Brooklyn Botanic Garden staff and volunteers
spent three days planting 12,000 bulbs
so that we could enjoy a colorful display of
tulips and grape hyacinths.  I didn't catch the name
of this ruffly pink cultivar, but I definitely
appreciate the hard work that made it possible.

Light Show

Snapped these on my way home one evening—
I just liked the way the petals caught the light.

I lied

. . . when I said I was done
posting tulips. But seriously—aren't
these just like sunshine on a stem?

Just One More

I know, I know. I'm going to change the name
of this blog to The Tulip is Mine. I think I'm done

now, but they're so beautiful—and so photogenic!

The Bold and the Beautiful

A few days ago, I showed you an orange tulip that
stood out in its simplicity.  And it stood out
because it was surrounded by these big, blowsy
blooms.  They do make a statement though, don't they?

Orange You Glad It's Friday?

There are dozens of tulip cultivars
blooming in the botanic garden right now,
some of an orange so vibrant it almost hurts.
This one stood out in its subtlety.

Tulip Time

In the space of a week or two, the tulip beds at the
Brooklyn Botanic Garden have gone from pretty
much empty to lots and lots of . . . this!
'Rembrandt' is just one of many, many cultivars
that seem to have sprouted up overnight.

The Weekend in Black and White

I shot this wonderfully spiky tulip in both
full (hot pink) color and black and white.
The biggest difference?  In the color photo,
what you see is . . . the color.  But in
monochrome, you notice everything else.
