The Weekend in Black and White

A few weeks ago Mother Nature gave us a
beautiful, warm, sunny weekend—then
she hit us with more cold and snow.
(You can't see it in the fog, but
at the end of this block is the U.N.)

"Love 2013"

That's the name of this fiberglass
sculpture by Ana Tsarev; it's part of her
Love and Peace Global Campaign. If
you're in NYC, you can see it (and take a picture
 to become part of the "campaign") at the corner of
2nd Ave. and 47th St. (about a block from
U.N. headquarters) until April 27.

The Weekend in Black and White

Across the street from the UN is "The King," of the
Olmec civilization of Mexico, considered the
"mother culture" of Mesoamerica because of its
achievements in science, mathematics, astronomy,
architecture—and sculpture. This statue is a
replica; the original dates to 1200–900 B.C.

Monday Mellow Yellows

One week ago was the 2nd anniversary of
the Fukushima disaster, and I found a small group
of protesters across the street from the U.N.
I guess this yellow is not all that mellow, is it?

Shadow Shot Sunday

Took this shot on the East Side of Manhattan,
in the general vicinity of the U.N., where
practically every other brownstone houses
a consulate.  I don't actually remember 
whose flag this is, but you can take your 
pick from among the 193 member nations.

abc wednesday —F is for "flags"

I'm sure you recognize this even if you've never been here.
These are just a few of the flags of the U.N. member
nations.  There are 193 of them lined up in (English)
alphabetical order in front of the headquarters in NYC.

This is a very high-end neighborhood
and that's the United Nations over there.
In fact, they did let us cross—but they should
have let the garbage collectors in too.

at the U.N. This one—one of many "Sphere
Within Sphere" works by Arnaldo Pomodoro—
was a gift from Italy in 1996.

Friedrik Reutersward, was a gift from
Luxembourg in 1988.

The U.N.

The Secretariat building, to be exact. Where
there will no doubt be a lot of discussion in
the next few days and weeks about North
Korea's little stunt. What is it about those
insane fanatical-dictator types that they
just can't seem to play by the rules??
