up in Montmartre . . .

near the place du Tertre, the heart of
Tourist Central.  I do remember a time
when there were artists doing
their thing in this neighborhood, but it was
still a real place (wow, I must be pretty old!).

Orange, VA

Drove through the town of Orange, Virginia,
last weekend and snapped this shot of
their pretty little train station—which used
to be very important here, but not so much now
that the trains don't stop here any more.
What interested me was that receptacle that
sort of looks like a mailbox; in fact, it's
for recycling used American flags.

the end of a perfect meal

Here's a lovely way to top off a delicious lunch—
especially if you get to enjoy it on the sunny terrace
of a great restaurant and if the restaurant
is on the island of Burano, near Venice.
(The people who were having this meal looked
pretty happy—and so did we, even w/o eating cake.)

Southern light

This one is compliments of my daughters, Lila and Kate
(because I'm not sure which one of them had this camera
just then)—it's the setting (but just barely) sun lighting up a
mountaintop in Antarctica.  I wondered how many people actually
get to enjoy this sight and it turns out to be quite a few,
considering:  More than 37,000 people now travel to
Antarctica every year (up from about 12,000 per year in 2001).
