au nom de la rose

This flower shop in the Marais features
roses and more roses, all beautifully
and inventively displayed.  And yet the
thing I chose to focus on here was
this old door.  If it were yours, would you
paint it or leave it as is?

  1. Paint it. The wood looks weathered raw at the bottom. That can’t be good. However I do love the antiqued look. It goes so well with my living-room rug (“Hey! Wipe your feet before you come in!” ; ). In fact, for others who like the weathered look, there is always something clear in the way of waterproof spar varnish or the like. The lack of a doorknob should be no problem. Since the door is the entrance to the residences in the building the door might be auto close. Keeping it looking as is could be a deterrent to over-curious burglars and the like.

As an American, I can’t help wondering if a disproportional number of customers in the Bistro across the street keep getting tossed out on their ears. You know, getting 86’d.

  3. I would have it restored to prevent further damage, have the old painting removed to have a look at the wood and would start from there.Gorgeous area the Marais.

  4. Good question. My first impulse is to leave it, but I agree with chai-and-chardonnay.

  7. This poor love is charming but I'm all for restoring and painting it. And I have a feeling the Feng Shui would be better ... ;)
