Mellow Yellow Monday

This was taken by my daughter Kate, on her
recent voyage to Vietnam.  It's Hanoi, where
there are many many many motor scooters and
not a single traffic sign, signal, or, apparently, law.
According to Katie, I'd never be able to cross
the street (and since I can barely cross the street even
in Rome, I'm sure she's right about that).

  1. This is so exotic to me, but to the fruit vender it is just the same old same old, like ever and always.

Even without seeing the traffic we can get a feel for the crowds of scooters, we being in one as it is.

There is really a lot going on here. Chinese/Vietnamese; organic/mechanical; urban/rural; spiritual/mercantile; Western (Katie)/Eastern... The exterior looks like some kind of temple but the interior that we can see looks like a warehouse.

I am assuming this little shrine or hall (tong), (or Ancestral Unification Council—according to Google Translation, if I got the correct characters...) is of Chinese provenance but I really don’t have a clue. Maybe one of your Chinese-fluent followers could offer edification.

Those white birds in the circle (cranes?) are an auspicious touch.

I wonder what those tongs (speaking of tongs) are for seen above the coconuts in back.

The woman’s face tells a story—eyes down, not exactly radiant with joy. Her nón lá hat at the ready behind her but not necessary due to the present overcast. Look at the stool she is sitting on.

Thanks for posting this and please give my compliments to the photographer.

Did I mention that I like this?

  3. Hahaha I laugh of what your daughter told you. Here in the US I am very afraid to cross the street in the Philippines it's easy. ^_^

  4. I love this, even with all the motorbikes, which remind me of India...kazillions of them there, too, and crossing a street is challenging, for along with them there are cars, trucks, buses, at least two kinds of rickshaws, cows....

  5. I've seen their rush hour on tv and it's really terrible.

    Have a fabulous week.

  6. Thanks, all! Maybe I'm not the only person out there who has a slight "issue" with traffic.

  8. Fascinating juxtaposition of old and new! Feels very hectic with the scooters all a hodgepodge.

  11. Great Yellow Arch! The first time I crossed the road in china was heart stopping! Believe me, American traffic (and I live in the L.A. area) is very safe!!
