One of my favorite quotes was in Jacob's Ladder: "Eckhart saw Hell too. He said: 'The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of life, your memories, your attachments. They burn them all away. But they're not punishing you,' he said. 'They're freeing your soul. So, if you're frightened of dying and... and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth.'"
Jacob's Ladder is one of my favorites Lily. Disturbing, confusing, upsetting, thought provoking, agonizing, that darkly insane atmosphere; but it all comes together in the end when an understanding arises of what is actually going on.
I just this moment realized that it is a modern, expanded take, of sorts, on a short film, and the story it is based on, titled, An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce. Short story here. Twenty-eight minute film here.
By the way, Lily, our beards are at least of a similar color. Do you think there is a distant genetic connection?
TG -- where DO you find this stuff? BTW, Bergen Street is the stop before mine, and . . . who knew it was that interesting. Am checking out the Jacob's ladder links soon as I get home.
That short U.S. Civil War film was a French production (so the film makers must know you from Le Procope, Alexa. What is that all about? I'm looking forward to whatever Phoenix Lynn produces for us). Strangely enough it was shown on February 28, 1964 as an episode of The Twilight Zone. I was impressed.
TG -- just watched the film—very impressive—and I believe I did indeed know some of those people. Go figure. BTW, I've made a deal w/the devil (as Phx Lynn put it), so you should be able to see what she did (oh, that Lynn!) on my Friday (the 13th) post.
I don't know about the other stations but Bergen Street looks like a thrill.

that's the bottom line, we can't live without it!
ReplyDeleteTG-have you seen the movie?
