ABC Wednesday—O is for "orthodox"

I live about a mile from the Brooklyn
neighborhood of Crown Heights, which I'm
sure is where this ultra-Orthodox gentleman
and his wife and (four) daughters live.  I don't know
as much as I should about my neighbors in the

nearby Hasidic community, but I do know
that his fantastic fur hat is called a shtreimel, made
typically of Russian sable, stone marten, or gray fox;
it is often a gift to the groom from his bride's father
and can cost anywhere from $1,000 to more than $5,000!

  1. Thank you for this interesting piece of information! Last year I was in Israel with Dina from Jerusalem Hills daily photo. She told me a lot about these orthodox people.
    I am sure you have seen her blog.

  2. Wonderful capture of this family.
    The hat is exquisite and must be very heavy.
    Fascinating world we live in.

  4. We had an interesting "meeting" of some Hasidic "gentlemen" when in London. Not very friendly, I must say. The men don't even acknowledge women or even look at them.

  5. I love traditional garb & even though I am not a big believer in fur anything I have to say his shtreimel is beautiful.
    Great catch Alexa.
