Weekend Reflections

If you plan to visit Venice in winter, better
pack your Wellies.  Last time I was there it was
November and I was not prepared for the
daily aqua alta.  This bird
managed to find the only
 (semi) dry
spot in all of Piazza San Marco.

Thursday Challenge—"wet"

The aqua alta was still in place (but, fortunately,
not any higher) an hour or so later when I ate
on the terrace here at Da Romano, on the
island of Burano,
near Venice.  BTW, it's worth wading through
high water for their fish risotto. Yum.

Thursday Challenge — "wet"

Venetians know all about "wet"—and they're well-prepared,
with high boots and these walkways, called passarelles
when the lagoon invades their city on a regular basis.

abc wednesday - A is for "aqua alta"

And here's the main drag of the Venetian island
of Burano.  Had lunch at this place, and by the time we'd
finished our fabulous meal of fish risotto, the
water was already receding (as I noted before,
the tide comes in and the tide goes out).

Mellow Yellow Monday

When the aqua is alta, Venetians are ready. The "high water"
sirens had sounded, and all the locals on this vaporetto
were ready with their stivali (mostly Wellies like these).

abc wednesday - V is for "Venice"

The challenge—choose one image that
says "Venice" to me.  Have to say,
this comes close:  The campanile of San Marco,
reflected in the aqua alta that flooded
Piazza San Marco each day I was there last month.

abc wednesday - U is for "under water"

In all the years I've been going to Venice, my recent visit was the first time
I've encountered aqua alta.  The sirens sounded, the passarelle (those
not-quite-wide-enough walkways) were up, Piazza San Marco was
inundated every day, and the poor pups were totally flummoxed.
