Okay, here's my excuse: it's my first post. This is actually the intersection of 8th Ave. & 57th St. I should know; I took this from my former workplace.
I keep getting this image of Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novac singing in 1958 a duet of a famous Drifter's (or James Taylor) song. ♪♫Up on the Roof♬♪♫
I like the building you are in. It looks like an Egyptian-obelisk adorned, art-deco-inspired architectonic base supporting a rather large and stumpy piece of glass asparagus. Love that Google Earth.
Vertigo indeed! "Louis" et Mme. la Vache live 14 floors up. When "Louis" looks out over his balcony to shoot a photo for San Francisco Bay Daily Photo, the vertigo doesn't bother him. However, in the hall while waiting for the elevator, if "Louis" looks out, the vertigo often sets in! Odd!
By the way - "Louis' lived in Paris for a time. He knows EXACTLY the spot where your profile photo was taken! "Louis" lived on the other side, the rive droit of la Seine on rue-Saint-Antoine.
Since your blog is new - you might enjoy these two memes: Sky Watch Friday and ABC Wednesday. Visit San Francisco Bay Daily Photo, prowl around a little, and you'll find examples of both memes.
tall gary -- goood description of the Hearst Bldg.! I too am in love with Google Earth (read: completely addicted). This building is, I believe, the first totally "green" office building in NYC. BTW, congrats -- I realize this only applies to PDP, but you are, in fact, the first GF to my blog (high five!).
Louis -- thanks for all the links. I lived more or less opposite you on the Left Bank (Place de l'Ecole Polytechnique), but perhaps not at the same time (I was there in the late sixties -- et toi)?
Hey Alexa! Congrats on the blog. I wouldn't have the talent to engage in creating one at this time in my life, but you are an inspiration for me to try one day. I love this shot and am feeling a bit dizzy. I've often remarked if I could come back in another lifetime, I would want to be reborn in the 1940s in NYC...near 52nd Street where all the hot jazz clubs lined up...playing with the likes of Coltrane and Parker and Dizzy. Hey, a guy can dream and hope, eh? As for the drumming, I absolutely love it and would give your brother some high fives if I met him. BTW...I also write (I'm a HS English teacher) and am work on my second book (set in Paris). My first one is still in the "rejection stage" from literary agents. ;-( Again congrats on your blog. High ten to you!!!
I am so proud of being number two above. Wait a minute, that doesn't sound right. I am so drenched as number one. Hmm. Worse.
It's great that you have the beginnings of your own blog. Better! The congratulations are all yours for doing it! Yes! High five from me also!
Coltrane, here's a photo of Coltrane practicing Japanese shakuhuhachi. I don't suppose he's playing that famous Paul Desmond tune, "Take Five Finger Holes."
Que de références en un seul mot et une seule photo ! But This is NY to me ! References !
I spent only one weekend in the Big Apple but it was enough to make me fall in love with the city. If you like American cinema as I do, you can't resist the "ambiance", the exciting feeling that you finally are in the middle of all those scenes you've been seeing for years.
That's what happened again when I looked at your post. So, please, continue, make us see New York differently just like Eric does with Paris ! (sorry for the English but early Sunday morning after late Saturday evening !)
Alexa, congratulations on your first post. If asked to give the photo a name I might venture to call it 'X Marks The Spot." Looking forward to your next post. David
BTW, this photo was not taken from the roof. The building is actually 44 stories tall, but the windows at the corners are constructed in such a way that you can hang out over the street like this. Wheee.
Coltrane -- I may have been to some of those NY jazz clubs back in the '40s, only before I was born. My parents went out a lot in those days, and a love of jazz is pretty much genetic in my family. Also: a book (or rather books)? Wow, and a much bigger deal than one post on a blog. Congrats to YOU.
Hey! I like the title of the blog too! Will this be more of a travel and concept place, rather than CDP? It's all good... Looking forward to whatever you serve forth.
uselaine -- didn't really know what this blog would ultimately be exactly, but was thinking travel-related. Am too time and vehicle challenged to ever attempt to do what Eric does (not sure how HE does it, even, just oh so glad he does). So thanks for the reinforcement. BTW, I'm a silent visitor to your blog, and enjoy it a lot.

Well done, Alexa! Everything looks so clean, what's up with that? It's not at all what I expect of NYC.
ReplyDeleteTall Gary...thanks, I enjoyed the picture of one of my musical inspirations.

ReplyDeleteTall Gary - Up On The Roof was written by Carole King!

Alexa, you're welcome any time. I don't mind a small burp or fart either - howsoever the spirit moves you.
ReplyDeleteIf you come around my place often enough, you will soon lose any intimidation you've picked up at PDP, I assure you.
Alexa, "Louis" was in Paris in 2005 - 2006.
