and what a view!

Saw this picture in a magazine a long

time ago, and swore that if I ever made

it to the Cinque Terre, this is where I'd stay.

And I am.  Hope the weather cooperates,

because as cool as this room is, I don't

want to spend that much time in it.

Was this really necessary?

How long does it take to spoil a world-class view?
Fewer than five months—as I watched this 17-story
building go up beside the Brooklyn Bridge.  You
can still walk out on the bridge and look over to the
Manhattan Bridge upriver, of course, so the view
is not entirely gone.  What really ticks me off is that—
with the exception of a small percentage of
apartments on the lower floors—this will be yet
more luxury housing for the few who can afford it.

Dial-switching brought me to the movie
"Kate and Leopold," which naturally made
me think of the Brooklyn Bridge. Here's
a slightly different view (and one that can
only be taken from a car, hence the shaky
composition). And no, I have no idea what
this space under the bridge was originally
used for. Any guesses?

If you want the best view of Manhattan,
just come to Brooklyn!  Especially now that
you can enjoy that view from Brooklyn Bridge Park,
a waterside green space along the East River.
It's still a work in progress, but what's been completed
is wonderful (and the Brooklyn Philharmonic
is playing there this Saturday).

ABC Wednesday—T is for "trust"

Took this shot at the same spot as yesterday's photo.
These kids were here on a school trip to NYC, 
and their teachers brought them to Brooklyn, 
blindfolded them, and led them up onto the 
Brooklyn Bridge for their first view of the city.

Moments after I took that picture, they
were told to remove their blindfolds—
and this is what they saw!

The first thing you see . . .

when you walk in the main gate of the
Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a huge circular
planter filled with dozens and dozens of
pink and red tulips. (What's just out of view
are the dozens of people posing in front of it.)
