ABC Wednesday—R is for "reindeer"

These young reindeer are "play fighting,"
just practicing for the real thing.

We were hiking in a place called Alkehornet,
a meadow at the base of a high cliff
(alke = cliff in Norwegian), where thousands
of Arctic birds were nesting.  In the meadow was
a herd of about 25 reindeer—that
(uncharacteristically) came very close to us.
The whole experience was pretty
special, to say the least!

ABC Wednesday—R is for "Radio Flyers"

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden held its huge
annual plant sale last week.  And to
help you buy even more than you had planned
to, they provided these little red wagons
that you could take as far as the garden's exits.

After that, you were on your own!

My daughter Katie and I managed
to fill one up—no problem.

seabirds, reflected

To me, it almost looks like these birds are

trapped in a field of ice. Not to worry, though—
I took this photo in late August.

ABC Wednesday—R is for "Rainy Rolls Royce"

At the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida,
they've created this homage to Dali's original
"Rainy Taxi," first displayed in 1938 at
the Exposition Internationale de Surrealism. It was

fitted with pipes to make it "rain" inside the car—
which held two mannequins and 200 live Burgundy snails
(and, I hope, some of whatever it is snails eat).

ABC Wednesday—R is for "ribbon"

Last time I was in Paris I stepped into Au Cabas d'Or,
a mercerie (notions store), on the rue du Caire.
Along with buttons and thread and embroidery floss,
they had a fabulous selection of ribbon of all kinds.
(I bought 3 pieces—including the blue
on the left—and framed them for a friend who
loves beautiful ribbon as much as I do.)

This was barely a quarter
of what was available.

ABC Wednesday—R is for "rose"

I just loved this bright pink rose blooming
in November (and trying to give the
turning leaves a bit of competition maybe?).

red peppers

I think they're beautiful (Christmas in July!),
but never cook with them. With these things, I find
there's a fine line between not enough and too
much—and I have no idea where that line is.

ABC Wednesday—R is for "robbery!"

Somewhere in Boise, Idaho, there's a comfy little
squirrel who lined her nest with purloined
prayer flags from my brother's garden.  And for

the sake of good karma, we let her get away with it.
(Besides, how cute is that?)
