One of the things I love about much of Italy (and especially Rome): You can point your camera and capture several layers of civilization in just one shot. [To see more ABC posts, go here.] |

ABC Wednesday—I is for "ice"
![]() |
This is Hansbreen (breen in Norwegian = glacier). |

| We hauled a piece of clear, clean ice aboard our Zodiac . . . |

and brought it to the ship's bartender, who put it in our drinks later. (I didn't wait. I picked a piece of glacial ice straight out of the water and ate it; never tasted anything cleaner.) [To see more ABC posts, go here.] |

ABC Wednesday—I is for "inquisitive"

More monkeys: I watched this baby baboon and his mama for a long time, and this was probably the only time he wasn't in motion. But Mom had a way of keeping him in check. |

She had a firm grip on his tail the entire time! [To see more ABC posts, go here.] |

ABC Wednesday—I is for "Invalides"
This shot was taken from the garden behind Auguste Rodin's house. Must say, the artist had a pretty nice view of Le Dôme des Invalides, beneath which is the final resting place of Napoleon Bonaparte. Oh, and there's also that other pointy-topped doodad peeking out from behind the trees on the left. [To see more ABC posts, go here.] |

ABC Wednesday—I is for inimitable**
![]() |
**though many have tried—and also for "I miss Eric!" (seen here shooting his lunch at Circonstances, a great Paris restaurant, last September). This would have been the 10th anniversary of his inoubliable (unforgettable) blog, Paris Daily Photo, the very first of the genre and the one that inspired me (and sooo many others) to start blogging. Eric put up his final PDP post last New Year's Eve. As much as I miss my daily dose of Paris as seen through the eyes (and pen) of this "friendly Parisian," I so admire Eric for making a bold move and wish him wonderful new adventures on his sunny island! ABC Wednesday—I is for "ice"
| In June, my daughter Katie took this shot of one of the ice caves in the Mendenhall Glacier, which is about 12 miles from Juneau and is part of the Tongass National Forest. A month later, some of the roof of one of the caves collapsed (not sure if it was this very one). The ice had thinned out due to you-know-what. Even here, you can see how much the ice is melting at the entrance. [To see more ABC posts, go here.] |

| Makes me shiver just looking at this scene— welcome to summer in Antarctica. I borrowed the picture from my daughter Lila (who traveled there with her sister last year). [To see more ABC posts, go here.] |

ABC Wednesday—I is for "illuminate"
| Took this shot a few years ago, and I believe it was the last time the city did this to commemorate 9/11. I was on lower Broadway, about a mile or so north of the original Trade Towers site. [To see more ABC posts, go here.] |

ABC Wednesday—I is for "iguana"
| This is a marine iguana (photo by my daughter Katie), which can be found nowhere on earth but in the Galapagos. Darwin thought they were disgusting and clumsy and referred to them as "imps of darkness." But, Charles, how could you resist that silly smile? [To see more ABC posts, go here.] |
