Weekend Reflections

This is the Pavillon du Lac, in the Parc de Bercy,
which I visited for the first time on my
recent visit to Paris.  It's worth traveling to
the outer arrondissements—where I never went
when
I lived there long ago, because it
was
considered too dangerous.  A whole lot
has changed
 in a half century (!).

les roses roses

Masses of pretty pink roses, for sale at
the Marché d'Aligre, in Paris.
They also had yummy figs (we got 1/2 kilo
for 3 euros) and avocados were six
for 2 euros! I just paid $3
for one avocado here in Brooklyn.

Weekend Reflection

Rue Théophile Roussel, right at the entrance
 to the Marché d'Aligre, is
reflected in the window of Le Baron Rouge
(oysters, anyone?) and in all those
wine glasses too.

Saint-Antoine-des-Quinze-Vingts

This Paris church is relatively young—it was
built in the neogothic style and completed
in 1903.  I've featured it here before.

Shapes and Shadows

Vases on display at
Baldwin-Guggisberg, one of the
beautiful shops along the Viaduc des Arts,
in Paris's 12th arrondissement—not exactly
central, but well worth the detour (for the shops
and the Promenade Plantée above them).

those buildings

There's a lot of construction going on in New York
these days—and none of it comes anywhere
near the charm of these buildings in Paris, put up

in the 19th century by the hundreds by Baron Haussmann.
I understand that cost and ease of construction
(and just how tall can we make it?) dictate what's getting
torn down and what's going up in its place in NYC
but I'm glad these elegant buildings are still there in Paris.

inSPIREd Sunday Shadows

A detail in the relatively new (early 20th century)
church of Saint-Antoine-des-Quinze-Vingts.
This is very much a neighborhood church, located
off the beaten tourist path in the 12th arrondissement.

The Weekend in Black and White

Here is Parasolerie Heurtault,

where this fellow makes beautiful
umbrellas (and canes too).

sombras de domingo

Yes, I did walk around Paris looking for shadows.
Thanks to the sunny weather, I found plenty—these were
at Lusofolie's, a space in the Viaduc des Arts
(see the post from day before yesterday)
that's dedicated to Portuguese culture.
(I guess some Portuguese wine is enjoyed here too.)

on the mend

This shop, called Artefact, specializes in
making and repairing architectural models.
It's one of the places along the Viaduc des Arts,
a very, very successful rehab of a railroad
viaduct.  The top became the Promenade Plantée
(which inspired NYC's High Line), and the
vaults below were divided into 64 spaces and given
glass walls front and back.  Artists and artisans
work there now, creating porcelain and
parasols, leather goods, furniture, fine art, and more.
