I am pretty sure that some time ago animals were raised here for the production of skins. You know, for shoes, belts, and purses and the like. But even with barbed wire topping the then well-built fence it was inadvisable to stir up the livestock with temptation and provocation. And, as is usual with the raising of livestock, there were considerably more than one.
