Set against a bright blue sky, the campanile of the Siena Cathedral, aka Santa Maria Assunta, aka the Duomo. [To see more churches from around the world, go here.]
I like the I, II, III, IIII, IIIII, IIIIII of negative space, the subtle gradation of the flat plane of blue contrasted with the pale (and striped) architectural stone. All is well balanced, even the standing figures.
I took a look upside down and felt that it looks too architectural, almost like a faux Tower of Pisa. As it is the tower looks increasingly lighter and more open with altitude, a kind of opening of its stone arms to heaven.
unlike most towers
ReplyDeleteBeautiful tower against a brilliantly blue sky!

ReplyDeleteRe the five openings, me too—and I tried to picture what they would look like reversed.
