Ladder 20, Division 1, Rescue 6

I thought the requisite dalmation at the firehouse
had gone the way of the horse-drawn fire engine, but
many stations still keep one as a kind of mascot,
including this one on Lafayette St. in Soho.
Before the 1920s, they performed an important function,
as friend and protector of the horses—guarding them
(and the equipment) against theft and running ahead of them
to clear the way when they were called to a fire.

FDNY to the rescue

I used a zoom to take this shot from the 32nd
floor of a building where I used to work.  It was
constructed in such a way that you can pretty much
hang over the street, with nothing between you and 8th Ave.
but the floor-to-ceiling glass.  Some of the employees
wouldn't get within 10 feet of those windows and some couldn't

stay away. You can probably guess which camp I was in.
