The Weekend in Black and White

Though actually being out of my usual rut—
whether in a place I know and love or a new
destination—is the best part, I still enjoy the voyage
itself (despite all the security, etc.) and also
the anticipation (OCD confession: I'm packed on
paper long before I put anything in a bag).
What's your favorite part of traveling?

  1. Off the top of my head I am thinking of finally being someplace I have long anticipated. For example walking into Victor Hugo’s old digs at Place des Vosges. Just being at the Place des Vosges for that matter. Or being right up there with the chimera on Notre Dame first glimpsed decades earlier here.

Getting by using the native language is up there also.

Being mistaken for a local (never happened in Japan for some reason. Ha ha. Although, come to think of it, that actually has happened on the phone.)

Being at this beach in Thailand while watching at dinner the same beach in a video of The Man with A Golden Gun.

The formation of massive new brain cell connections. Returning to a place that gets those old, dormant connections alive and synap-singing again.

    1. It all sounds good to me—and I'll be working on a few of these items. :~}

    2. As for the Louvre, this guy stands out, for having first seen him in an art-history class 45 years earlier. But what made him really stand out to me were his eyes: So realistic and made of polished stone (white magnesite) and polished crystal which weren’t even hinted at in the textbook.

Mona? Meh. Nike of Samothrace? Oh yeah!

    3. Winged Victory. Someday I might tell you the story of when I first met her. I've seen her twice now, and both times I wept, inexplicably.

  2. I can hardly put into words what it is I love most about traveling. It's the unfamiliar, the historical, the mysterious ages.

Thanks for the links, Gary, they're wonderful.

Alexa, I pack with a list, too. You and I were cloned from one heart, I think. Have a wonderful trip!

  4. The safe arrival especially it flying is the best part.
I use list too but I bet your list is better than mine. LOL
