I love this large mural, which I found in Paris—
don't remember exactly where it is,
but somewhere in the 3rd Arrondissement.
Also don't know what it means, but
I could come up with a couple of scenarios.
What do you think?

I saw this big poster in Soho a while back.
I never saw the show, but this
sounds like a resolution you not only
shouldn't break but one you
shouldn't have to make in the first place.
And yet . . .

remembering

Don't know if this mural is still here on
Staten Island; I took the picture
in 2009. But we New Yorkers never really
forget the sacrifice our firefighters
made 16 years ago.

Rise Above

This is the work of Shepard Fairey, the artist
who created the Obama "Hope" poster.
His intention was to make a positive image for
the people passing by this East Village
corner (at 1st Ave. & 11th St.), especially the
kids coming and going from the
local elementary school. (His model is his
own daughter, when she was three.)

Wheels!

Went up to Piermont, NY, last Saturday
for a wedding and took a walk
around town on Sunday morning.
We saw lots of bikers—and
this mural near the local bike shop.

Love Graffiti Crew

It's come up on this blog before—as much 
as I hate no-talent tagging, I love 
graffiti art.  This falls somewhere in the
middle, I think, but I do like it a lot;
it's colorful and clever and has a 
great sense of humor.

They've wrapped the entire façade of
this building on 57th Street so
we can all see what the finished product
will look like.  I'm thinking it
probably won't be purple though.

This land . . . which land?

I believe this mural—which I found last year in
Bordeaux—delivers a positive message.
What strikes me about it right now are the words
of Woody Guthrie's famous protest anthem
at the top, especially after Lady Gaga just sang
them Sunday at the Super Bowl.

Platform Diving

I've shown this image once before, along with
a couple other examples of subway art,
but at the time I knew nothing about it (and
was apparently too lazy to find out).
Now I can say that it's one of seven mosaic-tile
murals by Deborah Brown at the
Houston Street subway station.  The name of the
whole installation is "Platform Diving"
(clever—and I love the way she imagines the
station under water).

Greece? No . . .

This is in Paris's 14th arrondissement.
I got a kick out of the Greek-themed mural 
filling a 5-story wall next to a
Chinese take-out joint—in France.

Did you vote?

This billboard was parked in front of Tiffany's
on Fifth Avenue, on the same block
as the Trump Building.
I doubt that he would want this there.
  The SOS is spelled out with hands (though
not especially small ones).  Still, I don't think it
was created by any of his supporters.
BTW, just to get past the building I had to
deal with crowds, barricades, and police with guns,
large dogs, and a nasty attitude.  I can't wait
for this election to be over.

Engine 8 Ladder 2

Hard to believe it's been 15 years since the
firefighters at this midtown station
got called downtown to the Trade Towers.
Eight of the 343 firefighters killed that day came 
from this house, including their captain.

nice shoes

Not really so much a mural as a billboard, I guess.
Someone decided that a photo of one
well-dressed woman wearing those shoes
wouldn't be nearly as effective as three naked ones,
all wearing those shoes.  Honestly, I can't
say they were wrong.

Dancer descending

This graceful mural, at Spring and Hudson Streets
in the West Village, is the work of the French
artist JR, who has created other dancers
around the city.

art in the subway

New York in Transit is the name of this big
(only half of it is visible here) glass
 mosaic mural by Harlem Renaissance artist
Jacob Lawrence.  It was installed here
in the Times Square subway station in 2001
to coincide with a retrospective of his
work at the Whitney Museum.

where did it go?

I took this shot when I was on my way
to work one day last summer. 

When I passed by one rainy morning
recently, I noticed that things
had changed.  I wonder why.
