Actually, this is Hen Quarter, a "bourbon bar"
(46 different kinds—who even knew there 
were that many?) in Old Town, Alexandria.  I went
for the good food—but, yes, I did have
one of the 46 different kinds (and still kept calm).

Strömness, on South Georgia.

I was corrected by an Argentine because I
referred to the Malvinas (as she called them)
as the Falklands.  But these signs in
Port Stanley, the capital, make it very clear
(and so did the locals I spoke with) just
how the people who live there feel—British
through and through.

This sign is across the street from the 
Eddy Varekamp Gallery.  You can find reasonably
priced linocut and stencil prints at this
Amsterdam shop—a great gift or souvenir.

keep it clean

I posted an image of a shop window the other day—
and if you had to guess where it was, your 
first guess probably wouldn't be "the Netherlands."
This Amsterdam sign is for local dog walkers,
however.  Pretty easy to tell what it says, even if
you don't speak a word of Dutch.

laundromat?

There are signs like this on many of the
buildings in Amsterdam (often with
 no words and probably dating
back to a time when many people
couldn't read or write).
I'm having a hard time translating this,
and finally decided it could be the
name of the proprietors, who specialized
in . . . laundry?

I'm not sure who Mark is, but I have
to agree with this bit of advice.
This sign was in a restaurant—and, actually,
I did not eat dessert first, but that's
only because I was there for breakfast.

It's how old?!

Lots of people walk past this tree in the
Square Viviani in Paris and
don't even realize it's the oldest tree
in the city.  It's a locust, planted in 1601 by 
Jean Robin, the gardener of Henri IV.

stop by and see how it's doing.}

This is not really what I wanted to put
here today, but my computer
(specifically, iPhoto) has decided to turn
against me.  At any rate, I think
most waiters talk a little too much—as in
you don't need to ask me every
5 minutes if everything is hunky-dory.
(Sorry—cranky.)

Recently saw this helpful (note the braille)
sign in the subway, and have been
looking for others like it.  Haven't spotted
any yet, but it does look very old.
Maybe they've mostly been removed.

This sign, in Rome's ex-ghetto, honors
the 2,091 Jews who were picked
up there on that day in 1943 and taken
 to Nazi extermination camps.  
It's hanging on a wall next to a structure that
was built in the year 2 B.C.—
a thought-provoking juxtaposition.

dinner and a rainbow

 July 4th weekend:  Went out to collect
our dinner and came back with
a definite bonus.  I saw by friends posting
on Instagram that this storm
made its way up the East Coast and
left rainbows wherever it went.

I visited the town of Piermont (on the
Hudson in New York) last weekend,
and found this notice posted
in the window of the local grocery store.
Don't know if there were any
takers—would you have been tempted?

It's a sign

Appreciated the kind invitation, but I wasn't
tempted—I was on my way to lunch
at my fave place in Trastevere (which serves up
good Roman food like Mamma makes).

And today we're headed to Rome.
This sign is in the Capitoline Museum,
in Rome, and has been around
for a few millennia.  I don't read Latin,
but can make out a few words:
pontifical, senate, kings, first (and I'll
guess that "Ti Clau Aug" is Tiberius
Claudius Caesar Augustus).

This land . . . which land?

I believe this mural—which I found last year in
Bordeaux—delivers a positive message.
What strikes me about it right now are the words
of Woody Guthrie's famous protest anthem
at the top, especially after Lady Gaga just sang
them Sunday at the Super Bowl.
