Don't know if this mural is still here on
Staten Island; I took the picture
in 2009. But we New Yorkers never really
forget the sacrifice our firefighters
made 16 years ago.

Thursday Challenge—distant

My recent flight down South gave
me a pretty good—if distant—view of the
Verrazano-Narrows Bridge (along with a decent
slice of Brooklyn and a bit of Staten Island.

Shadow Shot Sunday

I took this picture more than a year ago, right after I discovered 
this fun meme.  Just wanted to finally post it and also say that 
I still love looking for shadow shots (great idea, Tracy!).

Mellow Yellow Monday

Here's another shot I took at Staten Island's
Snug Harbor Cultural Center, which includes
a first-class museum. This sculpture really
caught my eye—it's one of those things you
look at and think, "I could do that." But I'm
willing to bet money I don't even have that
you absolutely could not! So sorry, but I
didn't have my notebook with me, and can't
find the scrap of paper with the name of the
sculptor (and Google has failed me).

Shadow Shot Sunday

This is the Scholar's Garden, part of the
Snug Harbor Cultural Center, on Staten
Island—totally worth the short (and free)
ride on the ferry. Staten Island is way
off most folks' NYC radar except as a
cliché (as in the movie "Working Girl").
Shame, since it has a thriving art scene,
some decent restaurants, and this place.

Erin go bragh!

I have not one drop of Irish blood in my

veins, but on St. Patrick's Day we're ALL

Irish! So I'll be a good sport and wear

something green. Actually, the Irish

loom rather large in NYC and we've been

celebrating for a while; there was already

a parade in Queens on the 1st, and one

on Staten Island on the 8th. At that one,

Mayor Bloomberg veered off the parade

route and visited the home of some local

residents, where he chowed down on

corned beef and cabbage and played with

their dog, Elvis. (The Manhattan parade is

still pretty political.)
