art in the subway

New York in Transit is the name of this big
(only half of it is visible here) glass
mosaic mural by Harlem Renaissance artist
Jacob Lawrence.  It was installed here
in the Times Square subway station in 2001
to coincide with a retrospective of his
work at the Whitney Museum.

  6. Your image in its way resembles one of Jacob Lawrence’s paintings. Perhaps The Migration of the Negro.

Just as the mural transforms with brilliant artwork the somewhat drab environment, so, too, have you cast a bit of colorful enchantment into our world.

  8. It seems like an unlikely spot for a work by such a famous artist. Hopefully it's well cared for. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
