New York in Transit is the name of this big (only half of it is visible here) glass mosaic mural by Harlem Renaissance artist Jacob Lawrence. It was installed here in the Times Square subway station in 2001 to coincide with a retrospective of his work at the Whitney Museum. [Linking back to Monday Mural and Blue Monday.] |
Very colourful mural, it must certainly brighten the passenger's day!
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that I would be looking up and fall down the stairs.
ReplyDeletethat would be nice to look at every day!
ReplyDeleteHow neat. Wonderful that there is good lighting to show off those great colors.
ReplyDeleteAt least they added a little something pretty and bright for this area.
ReplyDeleteSuch vibrant colours!
ReplyDeleteYour image in its way resembles one of Jacob Lawrence’s paintings. Perhaps The Migration of the Negro.
ReplyDeleteJust as the mural transforms with brilliant artwork the somewhat drab environment, so, too, have you cast a bit of colorful enchantment into our world.
Hi Alexa, This is a great shot of the mural in the subway. Brilliantly done.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blue Monday and thank you for joining in the fun.
xo, Jeanne
It seems like an unlikely spot for a work by such a famous artist. Hopefully it's well cared for. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
ReplyDeleteVery bright and bold!
ReplyDeleteSomething to sooth the senses during the daily grind.
