inSPIREd Sunday

I think that a lot of the people who
visit the Pantheon in Rome
don't realize that it's also a church.

Many of them are mainly there
to look up and see
this
(which is incredible, I admit).

  1. Seem to remember visiting that as a kid of 15, huge unsupported roof

  2. Dribs and drabs:

A church from the 7th century (1,408 years to be exact), which I didn’t know before today, thank you.

The oculus is 27 feet across up there, and may have made of the Pantheon a giant sundial (which your photo made me wonder about).

The portico columns came from Egypt and for whatever reason—to reduce weight in shipping; boats or barges not long or large enough; a mistake in measurement; or...—the portico columns appear to be shorter than originally designed, and thus, the portico is lower.

    1. And the roof used to be clad in bronze, but it was removed and used to build the baldacchino over the main altar in St. Peter's (or possibly some cannons).

  3. The things I learn on the internet! What a gorgeous altar area.
