The Weekend In Black and White


As promised in yesterday's post, here's Lee Lawrie's
Art Deco statue of Atlas.  It's four stories tall, 
weighs 7 tons—and when it was unveiled in 1937
some folks complained; they thought the face looked 

bit too much like Benito Mussolini (actually, it does).

  5. Some interesting contrasts of old and new here. Stone age and bronze age. Neo-Gothic style and art deco. Ancient Greek mythology and Christianity...

    That Mussolini reference has me wondering if, rather than a white artist smock, Lawrie worked on this sculpture while wearing a blackshirt.

    A little know fact is that at its unveiling the globe held by Atlas looked much like this. But you know what happened when they looked across the street.
