ABC Wednesday—U is for "under construction"

I was a kid in the mid 20th century, a time when girls
played with dolls—and my older brother got
the Lionel trains, Lincoln Logs, and ... the erector set.
If I'd been allowed to play with "his" toys,
who
knows?  I might have grown up to be good
mom and an architect.  Just sayin'.

  1. And look at the company you would have.

I think they should keep the scaffolding up. I like it as you have caught it. Besides, they could use it as a trellis.

    1. I just looked at the U.S. women architects in the list above. About 80% were born before (much before) 1959.

What was it about the 50s that made it so imperative to pull back from even the 40s? And who was doing the pulling back?

  3. We were just in Los Angeles and I was surprised to see how much construction was underway. Maybe the real estate market has finally made a turn. - Margy

  4. Yep! If I were just starting out today, my choices would be infinitely more than the nurse, teacher, or salesclerk that was appropriate in my day. I would have loved to be a photojournalist!

    1. In my case, I could add secretary or nun. Photojournalist sounds about right to me!

  5. Yes, I surely get that if only. As a teen in the early 60's I scored higher than the guys on the mechanical part of the aptitude test. The teacher/counselor looked at me as if I were a freak of some sort... a girl with a brain for more than cooking.
