This one's for my daughter Lila, because today is her birthday—and she's celebrating in Florence, where I took this photo in May. [Linking back to Blue Monday at Magical Mystery Teacher.] |

There's a corner in my neighborhood where an unfinished construction site has been an eyesore for years now. Lately, though, it's become a good spot for some young artists to do their thing. [For the complete story, check out the links in Tall Gary's comment.] [Linking back to Blue Monday.] |

That's the name of Ann Gillen's 1970s sculpture, which has been in front of 909 3rd Ave. for about 20 years. She says, "I build sculptures that suggest movement in marble, stainless steel, aluminum, wood and slate. I work with the aesthetics of Constructed Sculpture with its analytic Apollonian rigor that combines with emotional Dionysian outbursts." I have no idea what analytic Apollonian rigor is, but this certainly does suggest movement, don't you think? [Linking back to Ruby Tuesday and Our World Tuesday.] |

Tina's Picstory—"M"
| In this case, M is for "mural" (and also maybe "movement"). The first mural to occupy this space at the corner of Houston and Bowery was a 2008 recreation of Keith Haring's famous 1982 Bowery mural. Since then, several artists' works have graced this wall. The latest (since July 2012) is this one by Lady Aiko. [To see more posts that feature the letter M, visit Tina's Picstory.] |

Blue Monday
In case you were thinking that this is just graffiti, think again. This is the work of the street artist Swoon, who has her own Wikipedia page. [To see more Blue Monday shots, visit Smiling Sally's meme.] |

That's My World
This crazy mural on Houston Street was created by Kenny Scharf, a California artist who now lives in (where else?) Brooklyn. I read that he didn't do a preliminary sketch, but just started with a red nose and worked out from there. [It's Tuesday, and that's my world. To see more of the world, go here to Klaus's meme.] |

How about a bike ride?
| This fantastic bike is parked underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. It's the work of Olek, crochet artist extraordinaire, who is currently based right here in Brooklyn. She's covered lots of things in crochet, including the huge statue of the bull on lower Broadway. Go here to see a short film of that installation. [This is part of That's My World Tuesday. Mellow Yellow Monday
| This is Urs Fischer's sculpture "Untitled (Lamp/Bear)." I shot it right before it was sold at auction by Christie's (for almost $7 million—and yet below estimate), while it was installed in front of the Seagram's building on Park Ave. It's 23 feet tall and weighs 35,000 pounds. [To see more yellow, go here.] |
| BTW, I shot this Urs Fischer sculpture in Venice (admittedly, this one I don't get at all). |

3D Impressionism
When I saw this from down the street,
I admit it—myopic me was fooled for
more than a few seconds. If you like
J. Seward Johnson's work, there's more here.
