ABC Wednesday—I is for "ice"

In June, my daughter Katie took this shot of 
one of the ice caves in the Mendenhall Glacier, 
which is about 12 miles from Juneau and is part of 
the Tongass National Forest.  A month later, some of the 
roof of one of the caves collapsed (not sure if it was
this very one).  The ice had thinned out due to 
you-know-what.  Even here, you can see 
how much the ice is melting at the entrance.

Pure Blue

My daughter Kate, who took this picture
in Antarctica recently, explained to me that
the reason glaciers are partly blue is because the ice
absorbs all colors except blue—which it reflects.

Traveling Tuesdays

My daughter Kate just spent a week up above the
Arctic Circle—lucky girl!  One day, they went out in a
Zodiac and chopped off a piece of this iceberg.

Here it is.  (And then they broke it up
and used it to chill cocktails—skol!)
