free as a . . .

"A robin redbreast in a cage/Puts all heaven
in a rage."  William Blake said that.
This little robin has an entire garden to enjoy—
and a tree full of crab apples
to get drunk on.

crab apples

Unlike yesterday's tree, this crab apple
has lost all its leaves.  I've seen
squirrels gorging themselves on rose hips
but never seen any eating these
little fruits.  Apparently they do, though—
here's one who ate too many fermented ones
(supposedly he was just fine after he'd slept it off).

"Every thought is a seed—

if you plant crab apples, don't plan
on harvesting Golden Delicious."
                                      — Bill Meyer

(On the other hand, you will get to enjoy this
pretty pop of red against the snow in winter.)

Signs of Spring

The thing I love best about this season
is when all of the flowering trees
burst into beautiful bloom. Just to put

things in perspective, I took another shot of
this very same crab apple tree back in January.

[Today's Thursday Photo Challenge is "spring."
