Saving the Planet

There are 12 of these globes on display
(until sometime in September)
as part of the exhibit "Cool Globes: Hot Ideas
for a Cool Planet," which traveled around
the world for years before arriving here in Battery Park.
Each one is five feet in diameter and each
portrays a simple, everyday idea for combatting
climate change.  You can see them all here.

Thursday Challenge—"young #2"

I cannot tell a lie: I was in Battery Park
(at the tip of Manhattan) this past
weekend, and used my long lens to take
a bunch of pictures of this adorable
little redhead and his black Lab.
(I did trash all but this one though; I'm 
not a total baby-stalker, you know.)

Shadow Shot Sunday

There are several war memorials in Battery Park, 

at the tip of Manhattan. These stone

slabs (part of the East Coast Memorial) are

inscribed with the names of all those lost in

the Atlantic during WWII.

You kind of have to be there to appreciate

just how dramatic it is, but blowing it up helps.

And it was about 30°F out there along the Hudson.

Those folks across the river in New Jersey 

have an amazing view!

It was originally built in what's now Battery Park,
to keep out the British invasion of 1812.  Now it
welcomes millions of visitors to New York Harbor.
I'm just glad it's still standing.

American Merchant Mariners Memorial

This is down in Battery Park, just off the Esplanade. It
reminds me a bit of the plane in the Hudson yesterday,
although this sculpture by Marisol is based on an 
incident that didn't end so well.

Some people will take a photo of . . .

. . . anything. Including me, apparently. (And why is it 
that rats are so creepy and squirrels are so cute?)

Lady Liberty

She looks pretty cold out there in the snow.

And so do these LL wannabes in Battery Park—
and they are. (My hands were so cold, I could
hardly take this picture.)
